PopFit for AUTISM BootCamp to Benefit
Over the past few months I have had the wonderful opportunity to head back to NYU, my alma matter, and talk to students about being an entrepreneur and working in tech. I was asked what advice I would give the budding entrepreneur. One piece I shared with attendees, and something I talk about frequently, is that in this crazy world of startups, it is very important to take some time out for oneself. For me, that’s focusing on wellness and fitness. I’m often found taking one or two SoulCycle classes or bootcamps early in the morning before I head into the office. Sometimes that’s rounded out with a mid-day or early evening class. This time helps my re-focus and allows my brain to recharge while also thinking of new ideas.
When possible, I like to combine my work (SALIDO/hospitality) with my personal life (wellness) as well as with another passion of mine, Autism Awareness. My brother is high-functioning autistic. Growing up I’d watch my Mom bring him to occupational and physical therapy and be his advocate to get him classified in school. The system tends to dismiss these kids, many of whom are brilliant, and all they need is just some extra attention and time to express themselves. I met Debbie Stone, Founder of Pop.Earth, last year at one of her events at The Dream Hotel, which has turned into a long-lasting friendship and partnership.
These three worlds are coming together on Saturday, April 30, 2016 when we at SALIDO along with Pop.Earth host PopFit, a morning bootcamp and breakfast to raise money for Autism Awareness (its then end of Autism Awareness month too). One of my good friends (and one of the city’s best trainers) Akin Akman will lead guests in his Akin’s Army bootcamp at Bandier’s Studio B. Afterwards we’ll enjoy a post-workout breakfast catered from the TAO Group and fresh smoothies from Indie Fresh. We still have a few tickets available by visiting www.popearth.org.
The idea of this fundraiser actually came to me in one of my bootcamps. So when I advise people to take some time to oneself, whatever that may be, I can attest that it truly does help.
